Know your herbs: Pirandai (Cissus quadrangularis)

The jointed winged stemmed vine is a good source of Vitamin C and calcium. According to Ayurveda and Siddha medicines, it is good for the bones and heals fractures faster.

Research has shown that the healing time is reduced my 33% and the bone setting is stronger with the use of this herb. It is good for growing children who are weak and thin because it is anabolic (i.e. builds tissues). This plant is recommended to prevent and treat post-menopausal osteoporosis patients.

Usage: The tender stems are cut and nodes removed. It is sauted and made into chutney with lime or tamarind. The tender stems are steeped in buttermilk and dried and made into vathal to be fried and eaten.
