"Across the country, a number of herbal gardens have
been established by various funding agencies where a large number of medicinal
plant species are maintained. But there is hardly any system for sharing
information for effective utilization of these public and private funded
gardens," DMAPR's director Satyabrata Maiti said, adding that this network
also provides access to information to common people about the wealth of herbal
gardens wealth of India.
Presently, a total of 110 herbal gardens across the country
have registered as members in the network providing access to 1,500 medicinal
plants. Of these 14 herbal gardens from Gujarat are part of this network.
The website provides database having information on species
such as species name, common name, number of plants available in each species,
planting material availability in the herbal gardens. The portal will also
facilitate exchange of planting materials among the gardens.
"The species have been classified based on the plant
habit type - tree, shrub, herb and climber," said Srinivas Rao, scientist
working in computer application and developer of the portal.
