Índia: Mountain-specific policy for medicinal, aromatic plants'

Uttarakhand should have a mountain-specific policy for medicinal and aromatic plants (MAP) said the principal chief conservator of forests, RBS Rawat while speaking at a workshop on MAP organised by GIZ-Regional Economic Development (RED) programme.

Rawat stressed on the need for a competitive spirit among farmers to boost the sector. Releasing a book on domestic market study for selected MAP of Uttarakhand, Rawat said that it will be of great importance to different MAP stakeholders of Uttarakhand. The State has identified 38 species of MAPs for cultivation with a base of around 23,000 registered medicinal plant farmers.

He elaborated on the details of the work done by the Uttarakhand Forest Department in promoting the sector. In order to bridge the gap between the department and the communities living in close proximity to the forest, initiatives are being taken to reduce the number of nurseries being maintained by the department by encouraging women self help groups for nursery development.

GIZ RED project director Vijay Kumar highlighted the importance of value chains approach in addressing the sector and emphasised the need for a market based approach and the relevance of such market studies for the decision makers and ultimately the farmers.
