Paquistão: Moot stresses the need for research work on medicinal plants

Karachi: National and international scientists have underscored the importance and efficacy of drugs of plants, and said that the drugs of plant origin have served the ages as the mainstay in the treatment of human ailments and preservation of health.

They stressed the need for carrying out more research work on medicinal plants for developing more effective remedies for the treatment of various diseases. They were speaking on Monday on the third day of the 4-day 13th International Symposium on Natural Product Chemistry, being held at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), Karachi University (KU).

Around 600 national and foreign scientists and researchers from 40 countries are participating in the symposium, which is considered as one of the most prestigious international events in the field of natural product sciences. The aim of the symposium is to bring together the leading experts in the field of natural products sciences from all around the world and form global partnership for sustainable utilization of natural resources for the common benefits of humanity and rapid development of the countries in the south.

Prof. Dr. Bina Siddiqui of ICCBS, in her plenary lecture, said that the drugs of plant origin have served the ages in the treatment of human ailments, while most of the indigenous medicine began as myth but developed with time as the complex science of modern medicine. She said, “The documented records of this journey cover the Indian, Chinese, Sumerian, Egyptian and Assyrian civilization followed by Greco-Roman, Arabian, Medieval and modern periods. The importance of natural products, particularly those derived form plants for drug discovery research and development grew with time. Although there have been a shifting of interest during this course towards obtaining synthetic compounds as therapeutic agents but as a matter of fact certain plant derived agents were never surpassed and remain valued medicines to day.A major reason being that the complex natural molecules, the nature continues to make have never been imagined by human.”

Senior professor of ICCBS, Prof. Dr. Viqar Uddin Ahmed, in his lecture, highlighted his research work conducted on the chemical constituents of medicinal plants of Malaysia, Turkey and Pakistan.
