The President also expressed his happiness over plantation of medicinal plants at Raj Bhavan.
On this occasion Governor Shekhar Dutt, his wife Sushmita Dutt, Chief Minister Raman Singh, daughter of the President Sharmishtha Mukherjee, Chief Secretary of Chhattisgarh Sunil Kumar, Director General of Police Anil M Navaney, Principal Secretary to Governor Jawahar Shrivastava and others were also present.
Notably, Parijaat plant is a full of medicinal values and has found mentioned even in our ancient literature.
According to a belief, lord Krishna himself had brought Parijaat tree to earth from the heaven and planted here.
It’s botanical name is Nictanthus arbor-tristis (photo). It belongs to Oleacea family. It is also known by the name of ‘Harsingar’ and ‘Shaiphali’. Its flowers blossom during night and fall down to earth with the dawn of the day and are deeply scented. It has a number of medicinal values and its bark, leaves and flowers are used for relieving pain, for curing fever and as anti worms by human beings. ‘Parijaat’ tree was very dear to Guru Ravindra Nath Tagore.
